In an important development, the treasury and opposition members are meeting on Monday today to reach a common point about the National Accountability (second amendment) Ordinance, 2019. The said amendments were “fired in the air under the signature” of President Dr. Arif Alvi on December 27, 2019 providing maximum protection to the bureaucracy and business community.
The opposition had straight away rejected the move from the government narrating that a Presidential ordinance was not the right channel to address the changes in the NAB laws. Realizing the fact that opposition outnumbered in the Senate, the ruling party sped up its efforts to get something positive from the opposition that seems to be a bit easier after opposition’s recent unconditional support for “amendments in Army Act”.
As for the bill of reducing the undue and infinite powers of NAB, the body language of both sides is quite positive and harmonious
The Minister for Science and Technology, Fawad Chaudhry had confirmed media that the lawmakers would meet for the said cause on January 13, 2020 and here comes the day. Replying a question about the reaction of NAB authorities for clipping their powers and clouts, he had suggested to wait and see as he was not sure of the consequences. However, he had affirmed the unanimous passage of some other bills by the parliament that had not been challenged and opposed by the opposition. As a matter of surprise, government and opposition have both changed their tones for each other and seem to be ready for creating soft corners for the opponents and that is quite evident from the smooth sailing of eight important bills in the recent past. The meeting between the government and opposition representatives is expected to be held in the chamber of NA Speaker, Asad Qaiser where the rulers will try to convince the antagonists for a win-win situation.
The National Assembly had passed some important bills on Friday January 10, 2020
The bills passed by NA include:
- Letters of Administration and Succession Certificates Bill, 2019
- Enforcement of Women’s Property Rights Bill, 2019
- Legal Aid and Justice Authority Bill, 2019
- Superior Courts (Court Dress and Mode of Address) Bill, 2019
- Zainab Alert, Response and Recovery Bill, 2019
Although PML-N leadership is facing a lot of criticism on every public forum on unconditional support on Army Chief Extension bill, both Nawaz and Shehbaz groups look quite satisfied believing that hard days are about to “go with the wind” and the spring is about to set in. It seems as if the party has been assured of some positive signs from the establishment and party leadership is trying to re-attain the ties with the king-makers by ending up the narrative of differences and collision with them. The lower level leadership of PML-N is also contented on the said move saying that it will be helpful in paving the way for getting rid of the unskilled selected government. Sources told that the party liaisons have started conveying the messages from top leaders to the parliamentarians and party office bearers to stay calm and get ready to enjoy the party as the political scenario is about to change in their favor.
