The stage is all set in Punjab where the election of new CM will be held on tomorrow July 22 between Hamza Shehbaz and Pervaiz Elahi.
Responding to the petition filed by the PML-Q leader Pervaiz Elahi, the Supreme Court of Pakistan on Wednesday directed the concerned authorities to present the text of Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah and Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb’s press conference which was held on July 18. In his petition, Elahi claimed that the Federal Interior Minister categorically hinted in his press conference about the disappearance of PTI MPAs before the upcoming CM Punjab’s election.
During the hearing today, Elahi’s lawyer Faisal Fareed requested the apex court to start contempt proceedings against PML-N three stalwarts including Raba Sanaullah, Marriyum Aurangzeb, and Attaullah Tarar for violating SC July 01 order of not harassing their political opponents and remain within the Constitutional limits. The court however observed that the petition was based on a newspaper clipping therefore the court wanted a transcript of the press conference so as to decide whether the case would be set for hearing or not.
Moved through Advocate Faisal Fareed, the speaker of Punjab Assembly who is also the PTI-PML-Q joint candidate for CM-ship, contended that after the recent by-polls in Punjab, he was in a position to form the next government in Punjab as decided by the people of the province by trusting the PTI candidates and leading them to the victory stand. It urged the SC to call the alleged contemnor and punish them as they had violated the apex court instructions.
After the recent by-polls PML-N has lost majority in the provincial assembly, says Pervaiz Elahi
In connection with the the SC’s July 1 order, Pervaiz Elahi told the court that the preparation for the Punjab CM election was on its way without any hurdle and that he was quite determined and hopeful to organize the election and business of assembly in a peaceful, just, transparent manner under the light of constitution, the law and the letter and spirit of the court order.
He however mentioned that the respondents on the other side were exhibiting extreme anger and frustration after losing the majority in the Punjab. He referred to Rana Sanalluah’s statement which was related to removing the PTI MPAs before the CM Punjab election so that they might not be able to cast their vote in his favor.
Elahi argued through the petition that the statement of interior minister was nothing less than interfering and obstructing the election process which was directed by the court earlier in this regard. He added that the respondents wanted to create a constitutional vacuum, anomaly or complication so as to keep the citizens of Punjab deprived of due representation and governance.
The opponents are using unconstitutional and illegal ways to influence the upcoming CM Punjab’s election, Elahi stated through petition in the Supreme Court
At a press conference alongwith Ms Aurangzeb on Monday, the interior minister had claimed that they would not let Mr Elahi become the CM Punjab easily. “If five to seven PTI lawmakers do not attend the voting session on July 22, how will the PTI get its candidate elected as the chief minister?” he had asked.
The current political situation in Punjab is quite tense as PTI is claiming that the opponents are trying to purchase the loyalty of MPAs by offering lucrative packages so that they might not cast their vote in Elahi’s favor
